CUSTOMIZE MY TRIPThe best seasons for the Upper Mustang Jeep Tour are spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November). During these months the skies are typically clear, temperatures are moderate, and the mountain views are excellent.
Because Upper Mustang lies in the rain shadow of the Himalayas, it also receives very little rainfall during the monsoon season, making travel possible even in summer months.
Upper Mustang is a restricted area of Nepal, meaning special permits are required. Travelers must obtain the Upper Mustang Restricted Area Permit as well as the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP). Solo travel is not permitted, and visitors must travel with a licensed guide.
This jeep tour is suitable for travelers of almost any fitness level. Most of the journey is completed by 4WD vehicle, with only short walks required when exploring villages, monasteries, and cultural sites.
Most travelers can obtain a Nepal tourist visa on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. Visitors should carry a valid passport, passport photos, and visa fees in cash.
Upper Mustang has a dry, desert-like climate. Daytime temperatures can range from 10°C to 20°C during trekking seasons, while nights are cooler due to the high altitude. The region experiences strong afternoon winds, particularly in the Kali Gandaki Valley.
