The Manaslu Circuit Trek is one of Nepal’s most remarkable long-distance trekking routes, circling Mount Manaslu (8,163 m), the eighth-highest mountain on Earth. Compared with the busy Everest and Annapurna trails, this journey remains quieter and more authentic because the region is protected as a restricted area. The trail winds through deep river gorges, dense forests, ancient Tibetan-influenced villages, and dramatic alpine landscapes before crossing the high Larkya La Pass.
The adventure begins with a scenic drive from Kathmandu into the hills of Gorkha, where the Budhi Gandaki River guides the early part of the trek. Terraced farms, waterfalls, and subtropical forests mark the lower valleys, gradually giving way to pine forests and rugged mountain terrain. Villages such as Jagat, Deng, and Namrung reveal a mix of Gurung and Tibetan heritage, while intricately carved mani walls, prayer wheels, and monasteries add spiritual depth to the journey.
As trekkers gain altitude, the landscape opens into vast alpine valleys surrounded by towering peaks. Lho and Samagaon offer unforgettable views of Manaslu’s immense north face. A rest day in Samagaon allows exploration of Birendra Lake or a hike toward Manaslu Base Camp, helping trekkers acclimatize before heading higher toward the Tibetan border.
The most demanding section arrives when crossing Larkya La Pass (5,160 m), the highest point of the trek. From the top, the horizon fills with snow-covered giants including Himlung Himal, Kang Guru, Cheo Himal, and Annapurna II. The descent leads into lush valleys and rhododendron forests around Bhimthang before connecting with the Annapurna region near Dharapani.
The Manaslu Circuit Trek combines wilderness, cultural discovery, and high mountain adventure. With fewer trekkers and strong cultural traditions still preserved in the region, it offers a rewarding alternative for travelers seeking a more remote Himalayan experience.

CUSTOMIZE MY TRIPThe best seasons for the Manaslu Circuit Trek are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). During these months the weather is generally stable, skies are clearer, and mountain views are at their best. Spring brings blooming rhododendron forests, while autumn offers crisp air and excellent visibility after the monsoon.
The Manaslu region is a restricted trekking area. Trekkers must obtain a Manaslu Restricted Area Permit along with the Manaslu Conservation Area Permit (MCAP) and Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP). Regulations require trekkers to travel with a licensed guide through a registered trekking agency.
This trek is considered strenuous due to long walking days and high altitude. Trekkers should be comfortable hiking 6–7 hours per day over uneven terrain. Prior trekking experience and good cardiovascular fitness will greatly enhance the experience and help with altitude adaptation.
Most travelers can obtain a Nepal tourist visa on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. Visitors must have a passport valid for at least six months and pay the visa fee according to their length of stay.
The Manaslu Circuit passes through multiple climate zones. Lower valleys are warm and humid, while higher elevations above 3,500 meters can be cold with strong winds. Night temperatures near the Larkya La Pass may drop well below freezing, especially in early spring or late autumn.
