The Upper Dolpo & Shey Gompa Trek leads deep into one of the most isolated and culturally fascinating regions of the Himalayas. Hidden beyond the Dhaulagiri range in northwestern Nepal, Upper Dolpo remains a land where centuries‑old Tibetan traditions, vast high‑altitude deserts, and sacred monasteries continue almost unchanged. This demanding expedition reveals a side of Nepal that few travelers ever see.
Your adventure begins with scenic flights from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj and onward to Juphal, the small mountain airstrip that serves as the gateway to Dolpo. From here the trail follows the Bheri and Suligad rivers into Shey Phoksundo National Park, Nepal’s largest protected area. Pine forests, dramatic cliffs, and cascading waterfalls guide you to the striking turquoise waters of Phoksundo Lake, the deepest lake in the country.
Beyond the lake the route enters a stark trans‑Himalayan landscape of eroded canyons and wide valleys. The journey crosses several high mountain passes, including Kang La (5,306 m) and Jeng La, rewarding trekkers with expansive views over barren plateaus and distant Himalayan peaks.
The spiritual highlight of the trek is Shey Gompa, an 11th‑century monastery set beneath the sacred Crystal Mountain. For pilgrims and locals alike, this monastery represents the spiritual heart of Inner Dolpo. Prayer flags flutter above ancient chortens while monks maintain traditions influenced by both Tibetan Buddhism and the ancient Bon religion.
As the trail winds through villages such as Namduna, Saldang, Tokyu, and Dho Tarap, you encounter a resilient mountain culture shaped by centuries of isolation. Yak caravans, stone houses, barley fields, and ancient monasteries reflect a way of life closely tied to the Tibetan plateau.

CUSTOMIZE MY TRIPThe ideal seasons for the Upper Dolpo Trek are spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November). During these months the weather is relatively stable with clear skies and excellent mountain visibility. Summer is also possible in Dolpo because the region lies in the rain shadow of the Himalayas.
Upper Dolpo is a restricted region requiring special permits issued by the Nepal government. Trekkers must obtain the Upper Dolpo Restricted Area Permit and the Shey Phoksundo National Park entry permit. A licensed guide and organized trekking agency are mandatory for entry.
This trek is classified as strenuous due to its remote location, long duration, and high mountain passes above 5,000 meters. Trekkers should have previous high‑altitude trekking experience and good physical endurance.
Most travelers can obtain a Nepal visa on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months and bring passport photos and the visa fee in cash.
Upper Dolpo lies in the trans‑Himalayan rain shadow and features a dry alpine climate. Days are often sunny but temperatures can drop below freezing at night, especially at high passes. Strong winds and rapid weather changes are possible.
