The Ruby Valley Trek is a rewarding off-the-beaten-path journey located between the Langtang National Park and the Manaslu Conservation Area. Despite lying close to Kathmandu, this region remains largely untouched by mass tourism, making it ideal for trekkers seeking authentic village life, peaceful trails, and expansive Himalayan scenery.
The valley takes its name from mineral deposits once discovered in the surrounding mountains, including ruby, zinc, and crystal. While mining never developed into a large industry, the name reflects the natural richness of this remote landscape. Trekking here reveals terraced hillsides, alpine meadows, waterfalls, and dense forests of pine, oak, bamboo, and rhododendron.
The adventure begins with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi, the gateway to the Langtang region. From here, the trail climbs through traditional Tamang settlements such as Gatlang and Somdang, where warm community-run homestays provide insight into daily life in the Himalayas. Along the way you will encounter Buddhist monasteries, prayer flags fluttering across ridges, and sacred sites like Parvati Kunda.
The highest point of the trek is Pangsang Pass (3,842 m), a remarkable viewpoint offering wide panoramas of the Ganesh Himal range and distant peaks of Langtang and Manaslu. After crossing the pass, the trail descends into remote villages such as Tipling, Chalish, and Borang, where cultural traditions of the Tamang and Gurung communities remain deeply preserved.
Unlike busier trekking routes, Ruby Valley emphasizes cultural exchange and community tourism. Nights are often spent in simple but welcoming homestays, allowing trekkers to share meals, learn local customs, and experience rural Himalayan hospitality firsthand.
For travelers who want a quieter trekking experience with diverse landscapes, vibrant culture, and magnificent mountain views, the Ruby Valley Trek offers an unforgettable journey into one of Nepal’s most underrated regions.

CUSTOMIZE MY TRIPThe most favorable seasons for the Ruby Valley Trek are spring (February to June) and autumn (September to December). During spring, rhododendron forests bloom and the hills turn vibrant with color. Autumn offers stable weather, excellent mountain visibility, and comfortable trekking temperatures. Winter trekking is possible but colder at higher elevations.
This trek requires a Langtang National Park entry permit and a TIMS (Trekkers' Information Management System) card. These permits help support conservation efforts and maintain trekking infrastructure in the region.
The Ruby Valley Trek is considered moderately difficult. Trekkers should be comfortable walking 5–7 hours a day on varied terrain including forest trails, steep ascents, and mountain ridges. Basic fitness and some prior hiking experience will make the journey more enjoyable.
Most travelers can obtain a Nepal visa on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. Visitors should carry a passport valid for at least six months and a few passport-sized photographs.
The Ruby Valley region experiences mild days and cooler nights during trekking seasons. Lower villages are generally warm, while higher areas near Pangsang Pass can become chilly, especially in the early morning or evening. Clear skies after monsoon provide excellent mountain views.
