The Royal Trek is one of the most relaxed and culturally engaging short treks in Nepal. Located in the foothills north of Pokhara, this route gained its name after Prince Charles and his entourage explored the trail in the early 1980s. Since then, the path has quietly remained one of the Annapurna region’s lesser‑known gems, offering travelers a peaceful alternative to busier trekking routes.
This journey winds through lush ridges, terraced farmland, and traditional Gurung settlements where daily life still follows long‑standing Himalayan traditions. Because the trail remains at relatively low elevations, it is well suited to beginners, families, and travelers who want an authentic trekking experience without extreme altitude. Along the way, hikers enjoy expansive views of the Annapurna range, Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), Lamjung Himal, Dhaulagiri, and the rolling hills surrounding the Pokhara Valley.
The trek begins with cultural exploration in Kathmandu before traveling to the lakeside city of Pokhara. From there, the trail gradually climbs from the tropical valleys near Begnas Lake to forested ridges and peaceful hilltop villages such as Kalikasthan, Patalu Danda, and Syaglung. These settlements provide warm hospitality, simple mountain lodges, and an opportunity to experience local food and traditions.
Unlike high‑altitude expeditions, the Royal Trek focuses on scenery and culture rather than endurance. Walking days typically last between five and seven hours, passing through rhododendron forests, open farmland, and panoramic viewpoints. Each ridge reveals new perspectives of the Annapurna massif rising dramatically above the green hills.
The journey concludes near Begnas Lake before returning to Pokhara and Kathmandu. In less than two weeks, trekkers experience Nepal’s welcoming culture, Himalayan landscapes, and peaceful village life — all without venturing into extreme elevations.

CUSTOMIZE MY TRIPThe Royal Trek can be completed year‑round, but the most favorable seasons are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). During these months, the weather is stable and the mountain views are especially clear. Spring also brings blooming rhododendron forests, while autumn offers crisp air and vibrant landscapes after the monsoon rains.
This trek lies within the Annapurna Conservation Area. Trekkers must obtain an Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP). These permits help protect the environment and support local communities living in the region.
The Royal Trek is considered an easy trek suitable for beginners. Walking days generally range from five to seven hours along well‑defined trails. Anyone with basic fitness and the ability to walk for several hours per day should find this trek comfortable and enjoyable.
Most travelers can obtain a Nepal visa on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. Visitors should carry a passport valid for at least six months and passport‑size photos. Visa fees vary depending on the length of stay.
Because the Royal Trek stays below 2,000 meters, temperatures remain moderate compared to high Himalayan routes. Days are typically warm and comfortable, while evenings can be cool. Clear skies during spring and autumn offer the best mountain panoramas.
Here's a recommended packing list for your trek. Some items can be rented or purchased in Kathmandu or at the trailhead.
