The Rara Lake with Humla Yari Valley Trek is an adventurous expedition across Nepal’s far‑western Himalaya, linking the tranquil forests of Rara National Park with the dramatic highlands of Humla near the Tibetan frontier. This journey follows little‑visited trails that form part of the Great Himalayan Trail, passing through isolated villages, ancient trade routes, and landscapes that feel far removed from the busy trekking corridors of central Nepal.
The trek begins with travel into the remote Karnali region and gradually approaches Rara Lake (2,990 m), Nepal’s largest freshwater lake. Surrounded by dense pine, spruce, and juniper forests, the lake reflects the surrounding hills and distant snowy peaks in a remarkable display of changing colors throughout the day. The surrounding Rara National Park protects a rich ecosystem with hundreds of plant species and wildlife including musk deer, Himalayan black bear, and colorful Himalayan pheasants.
Leaving the lake behind, the route pushes deeper into the rugged mountains of Humla. The trail follows ancient caravan paths once used by traders moving salt, grain, and wool between Nepal and Tibet. Stone villages, centuries‑old monasteries, and terraced fields reveal a strong Tibetan cultural influence that defines life in this isolated corner of the Himalaya.
The trek eventually climbs toward the high alpine landscapes of the Yari Valley, where vast valleys and wind‑carved ridges lead to high passes above 5,000 meters. Crossing these remote passes rewards trekkers with sweeping views of the Great Himalayan range and the stark beauty of the Tibetan plateau.
This trek is ideal for experienced adventurers seeking true wilderness. Expect long walking days, camping in remote locations, and encounters with communities that see few international visitors. In return, you gain access to one of Nepal’s most authentic trekking regions—an unforgettable blend of pristine nature, Himalayan culture, and raw mountain landscapes.

CUSTOMIZE MY TRIPThe best seasons for the Rara Lake and Yari Valley Trek are spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November). These months offer stable weather, clear mountain views, and comfortable trekking temperatures. Spring also brings blooming wildflowers across alpine meadows, while autumn provides crisp skies and excellent visibility across the Himalayan ranges.
Trekking in this region requires several permits including the Rara National Park Entry Permit and restricted area permits for Humla. These permits help regulate tourism in sensitive border regions and support conservation efforts within the park.
This trek is considered strenuous. Participants should be comfortable walking 6–7 hours per day over rugged terrain while carrying a daypack. Previous high‑altitude trekking experience and good cardiovascular fitness are strongly recommended.
Most travelers can obtain a Nepal tourist visa on arrival at Kathmandu International Airport. Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months and bring passport photos and the required visa fee in cash.
The far‑western Himalaya experiences cool alpine weather with strong sun during the day and cold nights at higher elevations. Temperatures can fall well below freezing above 4,000 meters. Clear mornings are common during trekking seasons, though sudden weather changes are always possible in high mountain terrain.
