Mera Peak (6,476m) stands as the highest trekking peak in Nepal and offers one of the most rewarding high‑altitude climbing experiences in the Himalayas. Located in the remote Hinku Valley within the Makalu Barun National Park, the journey combines an adventurous trek through wild alpine landscapes with an achievable mountaineering objective. For trekkers eager to step into the world of Himalayan climbing, Mera Peak provides an excellent introduction to glacier travel and basic alpine techniques.
The adventure begins with a scenic mountain flight to Lukla, the gateway to the Everest region. From here, the route diverges from the busy Everest Base Camp trail and heads south into quieter valleys and forested ridges. The trail winds through Sherpa villages, rhododendron forests, and high alpine meadows before entering the spectacular Hinku Valley. Along the way, you gradually gain altitude while passing settlements such as Kothe, Thangnak, and Khare, allowing your body to acclimatize to the thin mountain air.
Above Khare, the environment transforms dramatically as the trek reaches the Mera Glacier. Climbers establish a high camp before making the final push toward the summit. The ascent follows a steady snow slope using crampons, ice axes, and fixed ropes where necessary. While the climb is technically straightforward, the altitude demands good fitness, determination, and careful pacing.
Standing on the summit of Mera Peak delivers one of the most expansive mountain panoramas in Nepal. From this vantage point you can see five of the world's highest peaks: Everest (8,848m), Lhotse (8,516m), Makalu (8,463m), Cho Oyu (8,188m), and Kanchenjunga (8,586m), along with many other Himalayan giants.
Mera Peak is an ideal objective for strong trekkers aiming to step into high‑altitude mountaineering. With proper acclimatization, experienced Sherpa support, and careful planning, this expedition offers a challenging yet achievable Himalayan summit adventure.
