The Manaslu Circuit with Tsum Valley Trek is one of Nepal’s most immersive Himalayan journeys, combining a remote cultural valley with a high-altitude mountain circuit around the world’s eighth-highest peak, Mount Manaslu (8,163 m). This route ventures deep into restricted territory near the Nepal–Tibet border, where traditional villages, centuries-old monasteries, and untouched landscapes reveal a rare glimpse of Himalayan life.
The adventure begins with a scenic drive from Kathmandu into the Budhi Gandaki River valley. The trail gradually climbs through terraced farmland, subtropical forests, and stone villages inhabited by Gurung and Tibetan-descendant communities. Suspension bridges span roaring rivers while prayer flags flutter above ancient mani walls along the trail.
At Lokpa, the route branches toward the secluded Tsum Valley, often called the “Hidden Valley of Happiness.” This sacred Buddhist region remained isolated from outside travelers until 2008. Trekking through villages such as Chumling, Chhokang Paro, and Nile, you encounter distinctive Tibetan culture, chortens, prayer wheels, and monasteries including the revered Mu Gompa and Rachen Gompa. The valley is surrounded by magnificent peaks including Ganesh Himal, Sringi Himal, and Boudha Himal.
After exploring the spiritual heart of Tsum Valley, the trail reconnects with the main Manaslu Circuit. The journey continues through alpine landscapes and remote settlements like Namrung, Lho, Samagaon, and Samdo. A rest day at Samagaon allows for acclimatization and optional hikes to Birendra Lake or Manaslu Base Camp.
The highlight of the trek arrives at Larkya La Pass (5,106 m), a dramatic mountain crossing surrounded by glaciers and towering Himalayan peaks including Himlung Himal, Kang Guru, and Annapurna II. After reaching the pass, the trail descends into lush forests toward Bhimthang and Dharapani, where the trek concludes.
Blending cultural discovery, wilderness trekking, and high mountain adventure, the Manaslu Circuit with Tsum Valley Trek is ideal for trekkers seeking a quieter alternative to Nepal’s busier routes while still experiencing spectacular Himalayan scenery and authentic mountain culture.
