The Manaslu Circuit Trek with an overnight stay at Serang Gompa offers a rare blend of wild Himalayan scenery and authentic Tibetan Buddhist culture. Circling Mount Manaslu (8,163 m), the eighth-highest mountain in the world, this journey follows ancient trading routes through remote valleys close to the Nepal–Tibet border.
The adventure begins with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to the Budhi Gandaki Valley. From here the trail gradually climbs through terraced farmland, subtropical forests, and traditional Gurung and Nubri villages. Suspension bridges swing above turquoise rivers while stone paths lead through settlements decorated with prayer flags, chortens, and mani walls.
A special highlight of this itinerary is the peaceful overnight stay at Serang Gompa near Sama Gaon. Surrounded by silent mountains and glacial valleys, the monastery provides a spiritual pause in the journey. Spending a night here allows trekkers to witness monastic life, listen to the distant chants of Buddhist prayers, and enjoy remarkable views of Manaslu and surrounding peaks.
As the trek progresses, the landscape becomes increasingly alpine. After acclimatizing with optional hikes to Birendra Lake or Manaslu Base Camp, the trail leads to the high villages of Samdo and Dharmasala. The ultimate challenge arrives at Larkya La Pass (5,160 m), one of the most spectacular passes in the Himalayas, offering panoramic views of Himlung Himal, Kang Guru, Cheo Himal, and Annapurna II.
Crossing the pass reveals a dramatic change in scenery as you descend into the lush forests of the Annapurna region toward Bimthang and Dharapani. Throughout the journey, trekkers experience a rare combination of dramatic landscapes, limited crowds, and deep cultural encounters.
Because the Manaslu region is a restricted trekking area, visitor numbers remain controlled. This ensures a quieter trail and preserves the traditions of the mountain communities who call these valleys home.

CUSTOMIZE MY TRIPThe most favorable seasons for the Manaslu Circuit Trek are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). During these months the weather is generally stable, skies are clear, and mountain views are at their best. Spring brings blooming rhododendron forests while autumn offers crisp air and excellent visibility.
The Manaslu region is a restricted trekking area. Trekkers must obtain a Manaslu Restricted Area Permit along with the Manaslu Conservation Area Permit (MCAP) and Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP). Trekking must be arranged through a licensed agency and accompanied by a registered guide.
This trek is considered strenuous. Expect daily walks of 5–8 hours on rugged trails with significant altitude gain. Previous trekking experience, strong endurance, and preparation through cardio training and long hikes are highly recommended.
Most travelers can obtain a Nepal tourist visa on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. Visitors should carry a valid passport, passport photos, and the visa fee in cash.
The trek passes through several climate zones—from warm subtropical valleys to cold alpine landscapes above 4,000 meters. Temperatures can drop below freezing at night near Larkya La Pass, so proper cold-weather gear is essential.
