The Manaslu Circuit Trek through Pungyen Gompa is an immersive Himalayan journey that circles the world’s eighth-highest mountain while venturing into one of the most culturally preserved regions of Nepal. This variation of the classic Manaslu Circuit includes a memorable excursion to the secluded Pungyen Gompa monastery, perched high above the valley near Sama Gaun and surrounded by glaciers and towering Himalayan peaks.
The adventure begins with a scenic drive from Kathmandu into the deep gorge of the Budhi Gandaki River. The trail gradually climbs through terraced farmland, subtropical forests, and cascading waterfalls before entering alpine valleys surrounded by towering peaks. Traditional villages such as Jagat, Deng, Namrung, Lho, and Sama Gaun offer a glimpse into the daily lives of Gurung and Tibetan-influenced communities whose culture, language, and architecture reflect centuries of Himalayan heritage.
A highlight of this itinerary is the hike to Pungyen Gompa (around 4,200 m), an ancient monastery tucked beneath the massive Manaslu Glacier. From here, trekkers enjoy dramatic views of Mount Manaslu (8,163 m), icefalls, and rugged Himalayan ridges while experiencing the serene spiritual atmosphere of this sacred site.
After acclimatizing in Sama Gaun, the route continues north toward the Tibetan border, passing through the windswept settlement of Samdo and the high-altitude camp at Dharamsala. The most demanding and rewarding day arrives when crossing the legendary Larkya La Pass (5,106 m). From the top, the panorama stretches across Himlung Himal, Kang Guru, Cheo Himal, and Annapurna II.
The descent leads into lush alpine meadows and rhododendron forests near Bhimthang before connecting with the Annapurna region at Dharapani. Throughout the journey, trekkers experience remote mountain landscapes, traditional Buddhist culture, and the raw grandeur of the Manaslu Himalayas.
For travelers seeking a quieter alternative to more crowded Himalayan routes, the Manaslu Circuit with Pungyen Gompa offers a remarkable blend of wilderness trekking, cultural discovery, and high mountain adventure.

CUSTOMIZE MY TRIPThe best seasons for the Manaslu Circuit Trek are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). During these months the skies are generally clear, temperatures are stable, and mountain views are at their best. Spring brings blooming rhododendron forests, while autumn offers crisp air and excellent visibility after the monsoon.
The Manaslu region is classified as a restricted trekking area. Trekkers must obtain a Manaslu Restricted Area Permit, a Manaslu Conservation Area Permit (MCAP), and an Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP). Trekking must be arranged through a registered Nepali trekking company and accompanied by a licensed guide.
This trek is considered challenging due to its long walking days, remote terrain, and high altitude. Trekkers should be comfortable walking 5–7 hours per day and should prepare with cardio training, hiking, and strength exercises prior to the trip.
Most travelers can obtain a Nepal tourist visa on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. Ensure your passport has at least six months validity and bring passport photos for the visa application.
The trek spans multiple climate zones. Lower valleys are warm and subtropical, while higher elevations near Larkya La Pass can be cold and windy. Daytime temperatures are usually pleasant during trekking seasons, but nights above 3,500 meters can drop below freezing.
