The Khopra Ridge Trek is one of the Annapurna region’s most rewarding yet less crowded trekking routes. While many trekkers follow the busy trails to Annapurna Base Camp or the Annapurna Circuit, this route climbs to a peaceful ridge above the Kali Gandaki Valley where expansive Himalayan panoramas unfold in every direction. From the high viewpoint at Khopra Danda, the snowy faces of Dhaulagiri, Annapurna South, Nilgiri, and Machhapuchhre dominate the skyline.
This 12‑day journey begins in Kathmandu before traveling to Pokhara, the lakeside gateway to the Annapurna mountains. The trekking trail passes through charming Gurung and Magar villages such as Ghandruk, climbs through lush forests of rhododendron and oak, and follows quiet alpine ridges that see far fewer trekkers than nearby routes. Along the way, you may spot wildlife including Himalayan thar, colorful pheasants, and hardy mountain livestock like dzos.
The highlight of the trek is the climb to Khopra Ridge (3,660 m), a spectacular viewpoint perched high above the valleys. From this vantage point, massive Himalayan peaks rise dramatically across the horizon, especially the enormous north face of Dhaulagiri. Trekkers also have the option to hike to the sacred Khayer Lake, an alpine lake revered by local communities and surrounded by rugged mountain scenery.
The route then continues through remote villages before rejoining the classic Annapurna trail at Ghorepani, where an early morning hike to Poon Hill rewards trekkers with a sunrise panorama over the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. The journey ends with a scenic return to Pokhara and Kathmandu.
With comfortable teahouse accommodation, varied landscapes, and a blend of culture and wilderness, the Khopra Ridge Trek is ideal for travelers seeking a quieter Himalayan experience without extreme altitude. It combines well‑established trekking infrastructure with the feeling of exploring a hidden corner of the Annapurna region.
