The Gokyo Valley, Cho La Pass, and Everest Base Camp Trek is one of the most rewarding trekking circuits in Nepal’s Everest region. This journey blends three legendary Himalayan experiences into a single adventure: the turquoise lakes of Gokyo Valley, the dramatic crossing of Cho La Pass, and the iconic trail to Everest Base Camp.
The trek begins with a scenic mountain flight to Lukla, the gateway to the Khumbu region. Following the Dudh Koshi River, the trail winds through forests of pine and rhododendron, traditional Sherpa villages, and ancient Buddhist monasteries. Namche Bazaar, the vibrant trading hub of the region, offers the first acclimatization stop and sweeping views of Himalayan giants including Everest and Ama Dablam.
Leaving the main Everest Base Camp trail, the route ascends into the tranquil Gokyo Valley. Here you will discover a chain of high‑altitude turquoise lakes set beneath towering peaks and glaciers. A sunrise climb of Gokyo Ri reveals one of the finest panoramic viewpoints in the Himalayas, where Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu dominate the skyline.
The adventure intensifies as the trail crosses the dramatic Cho La Pass at 5,420 meters. This high mountain pass connects the Gokyo Valley with the Khumbu Glacier valley and rewards trekkers with rugged alpine scenery and glacier views. After descending to Lobuche, the route joins the classic Everest Base Camp trail.
You will trek to Everest Base Camp itself, standing beside the Khumbu Icefall beneath the world’s highest peak. The following morning, a sunrise hike to Kala Patthar provides the most spectacular close‑up view of Mount Everest.
Combining pristine alpine lakes, high‑altitude passes, Sherpa culture, and the legendary Everest Base Camp, this trek is ideal for adventurous hikers seeking the most complete Everest experience.

CUSTOMIZE MY TRIPThe ideal seasons for the Gokyo, Cho La Pass, and Everest Base Camp trek are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). During these months, skies are typically clear, mountain views are excellent, and temperatures are comfortable for trekking. Spring also brings blooming rhododendron forests, while autumn offers crisp air and stable weather after the monsoon.
Trekkers need two permits for this trek: the Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit and the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit. These permits allow access to the protected Everest region and help support conservation and local infrastructure.
This is a strenuous trek involving multiple days of hiking at high altitude and crossing the 5,420‑meter Cho La Pass. Trekkers should be physically fit and comfortable walking 5–7 hours per day on rugged terrain. Previous trekking experience and basic endurance training are highly recommended.
Most travelers can obtain a Nepal tourist visa upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. Visitors must have a valid passport with at least six months of validity and passport photos. Visa fees vary depending on the length of stay.
The Everest region experiences cold alpine conditions. Daytime temperatures during trekking seasons typically range from 5°C to 15°C at mid elevations but can fall below freezing at higher altitudes. Nights near Everest Base Camp are often well below 0°C, so proper cold-weather gear is essential.
