The Gokyo Lake Trek with Renjo La Pass is an adventurous journey through one of the most beautiful yet less crowded areas of the Everest region. Instead of following the busy route to Everest Base Camp, this trek leads you into the tranquil Gokyo Valley, home to a chain of shimmering alpine lakes and dramatic views of the world's highest peaks. The highlight is crossing the spectacular Renjo La Pass (5,360 m), one of the famous high passes of the Khumbu region.
The adventure begins with a scenic mountain flight to Lukla before trekking through charming Sherpa villages along the Dudh Koshi River. Passing through forests of pine and rhododendron, the trail gradually climbs to the lively mountain hub of Namche Bazaar, where trekkers acclimatize while enjoying views of Everest and neighboring peaks.
Leaving the classic Everest Base Camp trail behind, the route turns toward the peaceful Gokyo Valley. Villages like Dole and Machhermo sit beneath towering cliffs and glaciers, leading toward the vast Ngozumpa Glacier — the largest glacier in Nepal. Beyond it lies the beautiful settlement of Gokyo beside the third of the sacred Gokyo Lakes.
An early morning climb to Gokyo Ri (5,357 m) reveals one of the finest viewpoints in the Himalaya. From its summit, a panorama unfolds featuring Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu rising above the glacier-filled valleys below.
The most demanding day of the trek arrives with the ascent of Renjo La Pass. The climb rewards trekkers with an extraordinary perspective over the turquoise Gokyo Lakes and a sweeping skyline of Himalayan giants. From the pass, the trail descends through the remote villages of Lungden and Thame before rejoining the main route back to Namche and Lukla.
This trek blends natural beauty, high mountain adventure, and Sherpa culture into a rewarding Himalayan experience. For trekkers seeking dramatic landscapes, quieter trails, and a challenging high‑pass crossing, the Gokyo Lake Trek with Renjo La Pass is a remarkable alternative to the classic Everest Base Camp route.

CUSTOMIZE MY TRIPThe ideal seasons for the Gokyo Lake and Renjo La Pass Trek are spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November). During these months the weather is stable, skies are generally clear, and mountain views are at their best. Spring brings blooming rhododendron forests in the lower valleys, while autumn offers crisp air and exceptional visibility after the monsoon.
Trekkers must obtain the Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit and the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit. These permits help protect the fragile mountain environment and support local communities in the Everest region.
This trek is considered challenging due to high altitude and daily walking hours of 5–7 hours. Crossing Renjo La Pass requires good endurance and stamina. Prior trekking experience and physical preparation such as hiking, running, or cycling for several weeks before the trip are strongly recommended.
Most travelers can obtain a Nepal tourist visa on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. Visitors should carry a valid passport with at least six months validity and passport photos. Visa fees vary depending on the duration of stay.
