The Everest Base Camp with Gokyo Lakes via Cho La Pass trek is one of the most rewarding adventures in the Khumbu region. Instead of following the standard Everest Base Camp route alone, this journey links two spectacular valleys — the classic Everest Base Camp trail and the serene Gokyo Valley — by crossing the high alpine Cho La Pass.
Your journey begins with a scenic flight to Lukla, the gateway to the Everest region. The trail follows the Dudh Koshi River through forests of pine and rhododendron, passing Sherpa villages such as Phakding and the lively trading hub of Namche Bazaar. As you ascend deeper into the mountains, views of Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, and Thamserku become increasingly dramatic.
After acclimatizing in Namche, the route diverges from the busy Everest Base Camp path and heads toward the tranquil Gokyo Valley. This section of the trek offers a quieter experience with spectacular scenery. The chain of turquoise Gokyo Lakes sits beneath towering Himalayan peaks and beside the immense Ngozumpa Glacier — the largest glacier in Nepal. A climb to Gokyo Ri (5,483 m) reveals one of the finest panoramas in the Himalayas, including Everest, Cho Oyu, Makalu, and Lhotse.
The adventure continues across the challenging Cho La Pass (5,330 m), a dramatic high‑altitude crossing surrounded by glaciers and jagged peaks. After descending into the Khumbu Valley again, trekkers visit iconic locations including Lobuche, Gorak Shep, and finally Everest Base Camp itself. A sunrise hike to Kala Patthar (5,550 m) offers the closest and most impressive view of Mount Everest during the entire trek.
This route combines the highlights of Everest Base Camp with the beauty of the Gokyo Lakes, making it ideal for trekkers seeking a diverse and adventurous alternative to the traditional EBC trek.
