The Annapurna Base Camp with Khopra Ridge Trek blends two remarkable Himalayan experiences into one unforgettable journey. Instead of following the busy main trail directly to Annapurna Base Camp, this itinerary first climbs to the quiet ridge of Khopra Danda, a viewpoint known for its wide panoramas of both the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. The route then connects with the legendary Annapurna Sanctuary trail, eventually reaching Annapurna Base Camp at the heart of the mountains.
The trek begins with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara, Nepal’s relaxed lakeside city and the gateway to the Annapurna region. From there, the trail winds through terraced farmland and traditional Gurung and Magar villages before entering lush rhododendron and oak forests. As the elevation increases, the views gradually expand to reveal dramatic Himalayan peaks including Annapurna South, Machapuchare (Fishtail), Nilgiri, Hiunchuli, and the distant mass of Dhaulagiri.
Khopra Ridge is one of the highlights of the journey. Perched high above the Kali Gandaki valley, it offers an exceptional vantage point rarely crowded by trekkers. From here, an optional hike leads to the sacred Khayar Lake at around 4,660 meters. This high alpine lake holds spiritual significance for local communities and sits beneath towering peaks and rugged glacial terrain.
After leaving Khopra, the trail gradually descends through alpine pastures before joining the classic Annapurna Base Camp route. The trek continues through bamboo forests and river valleys to Machapuchare Base Camp and finally Annapurna Base Camp (4,130 m), where a dramatic amphitheater of snow-covered summits surrounds the sanctuary.
The journey concludes with a relaxing descent through forested valleys and the chance to soak in natural hot springs at Jhinu Danda. With varied landscapes, authentic mountain culture, and spectacular viewpoints, the Annapurna Base Camp with Khopra Ridge Trek is ideal for travelers seeking a quieter and more diverse route to one of Nepal’s most iconic destinations.
